The icon shows four figures: Mother of God, Baby Jesus, Archangel Michael and Gabriel. Mary holds the Son in her arms, who holds her hands in the Mother's. The way Jesus is presented clearly emphasizes his childhood and human nature, which is emphasized by a sandal sliding off the foot. The Child does not look at the Mother, but turns his head in the opposite direction and seems to be looking at one of the Archangels. Held by God's messengers the arma Christi announcethe imminent death of Jesus.

The form of the icon differs from the original. The images show the influence of the icon of Western European art at the time of its creation.
