The work is painted according to the original "Madonna among the Rocks" by Leonardo da Vinci, currently in the Louvre.

It shows Mary sitting inside the grotto. She is accompanied by the Baby Jesus who blesses John the Baptist.

The squat angel also points to the little prophet, emphasizing his importance for the Christian community.
