PAIR OF BUSTS, ebony, Africa, 19th / 20th century

A pair of folk African busts. Simplification and synthesis of shapes typical of sculptures from this region. The figures have clearly defined eyebrow arches, eyelids, prominent noses and lips, and strongly emphasized cheeks. African folk sculpture had a significant influence on the formation of a new language of artistic form in 20th century art.
