SACRIFICE OF ABRAHAM, wood, 17th / 18th century
A bas-relief depicting a biblical scene - the climax of Abraham's sacrifice with remarkable meticulousness.
According to the Scriptures, the patriarch of the family was to lay his own son on the altar he had built. At the moment of reaching for the knife, the Angel of the Lord descended from heaven and, in recognition of Abraham's great faith, ordered that Isaac be replaced with a lamb.
