+Tray - basket with figures, various metals, Japan, Meiji era (1868-1912).
Japanese tray - basket made of various metals: brass, copper, silver, with gilding. It shows figures of Buddhist monks - probably Rakans (Arhats) and a child pulling a cart. Around the figures we see a landscape with hand-engraved decorations showing, among other things, a cherry blossom tree or lotus flowers. Rakans are the original followers of the historical Buddha, who followed the Noble Eightfold Path and achieved the four stages of enlightenment. Their task is to protect the Buddhist faith and await on earth the coming of Maitreya, the enlightened Buddha who was to come to earth many millennia after the death of Gautama Buddha.
Japan, Meiji era (1868-1912).
