A dish made of ceramic (stoneware) with hand-painted decoration. It probably depicts Bodhidharma (Japanese: Bodai Daruma), i.e. the legendary patriarch of Zen Buddhism who lived in the 5th and 6th centuries AD. Bodhidharma came from his native India to China as a wandering monk, where, among other things, he met Emperor Wu Di in the city of Nanjing and became famous for his nine-year meditation in a cave near Shaolin in Henan province.

Seto, Japan, Edo / Meji era, 19th century.

Diameter 36 cm, height 6.5 cm.

Good state of preservation, minor scratches.
