Demetre Haralamb Chiparus (1886-1947) - Romanian-born, one of the most important sculptors of the Art deco period. He studied in Italy and France. He established his career in Paris. The works created by Chiparus were inspired by dance, especially Russian ballet and archaeological discoveries in Egypt. The artist often drew on a technique known from antiquity - chryselephantine - combining metal castings with carved ivory. Also in the style of the sculptures, references to classical Greek idealised figures are evident. Chiparus' interests were not limited to the human figure; he visited the zoo where he sketched animals. During the Second World War, Chiparus's works were forgotten, but in the 1970s they began to enjoy success again, which continues today.
