A pair of lion candlesticks made of glazed and hand-painted faience. The majestic lions hold in their hands the base of the candlesticks which resembles a medieval tower and is covered from the front by the Lorraine coat of arms.

Height 35 cm and 34.5 cm.

Emile Gallé (1846-1904), faience, Manufacture de Saint-Clément, late 19th century. Signed: ‘E. G. Nancy’ with a Lorraine cross.

Good state of preservation, visible rubbing of the glaze.

Émile Gallé's manufactory was famous for producing first-class furniture and glassware. However, before Gallé began creating his famous furniture and glass objects, he was involved in designing faience works , first at the Saint-Clement factory and later also at his own. Emile Gallé loved walks in the wild woods and had his own small botanical garden, and hung signs above the door of his studio: ‘Our roots are deep in the forest - on the banks of streams and among the moss’.
