Description

A large sculpture made of gilded bronze depicting Buddha Shakyamuni, a historical Buddha who lived in India in the 6th and 5th centuries BC. Buddha is shown in the lotus position, with his hands making the gesture of Bhumisparsha, or calling the earth to witness. Buddha sits on an unusual base decorated with bas-reliefs showing lion masks and mysterious figures, somewhat reminiscent of bas-reliefs from the Lopburi period (11th - 13th century) when part of Thailand was under the rule of the Khmer Kingdom.
