The patinated bronze sculpture depicts a woman sitting on a chair with a child standing next to her. The mother is dressed in antique clothing, originally she was holding something in her hands, perhaps a book. The sculpture was made with great attention to detail, which can be seen in the hair or fingers of the figure.

Description

Mathurin Moreau (1822 Dijon - 1912 Paris): French sculptor from a sculpting family based in Dijon. His father Jean-Baptiste-Louis-Joseph Moreau was a sculptor, as were his brothers Hippolyte and Auguste. He was accepted to l'École des beaux-arts in Paris in 1841 and studied under sculptors such as Jules Ramey and Auguste Dumont. In 1842 he won second place in the prestigious Prix de Rome competition. He made his debut at the Salon des artistes français in 1848. He was the author of many cabinet sculptures as well as monumental monuments and fountains that today adorn many French and other cities, such as Paris, Geneva, Québec and Buenos Aires.
