GODDESS KANNON, bronze, Japan, 19th / 20th century

A figure showing a woman dressed in a large robe, with an impressive necklace, holding a basket with fish. Most likely, it is Kannon, the goddess of grace, mercy, especially popular in Japan. The presence of goddess worship is the result of the spread of the ideas of the Indian Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara, or the Chinese Guanyin.
