One of the most popular themes of religious art - mourning over the body of the dead Christ. The body of Jesus is customarily supported by the Mother of God. Mary Magdalene bows down to the Savior's feet. John the Evangelist, beloved disciple of Christ, stands clearly above this group. Also present are Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus, responsible for drawing the body off the cross. In the background, a ladder is visible, referring the viewer to an earlier event.
