The portrait most likely depicts Hortense Allart de Meritens (1801-1879), also known under the pseudonym Prudence de Saman L'Esbatx, a French feminist writer. The scandal caused by the publication of Les enchant brought her fameements de Prudence, Avec George Sand.She had a long-term love affair with the eponymous George Sand. Allart was an active participant in the Parisian intellectual circles.
