Alexandre-Denis Abel de Pujol (1785-1861) - French painter, student of Jacques Louis David, representative of Neoclassicism. Known for decorating the ceiling of the Louvre grand staircase and decorations in the Diana's Gallery in Fontainebleau Palace.

The portrait shows Hortense Allart de Meritens (1801-1879), also known as Prudence de Saman L'Esbatx, a French feminist writer. It was famous for the scandal caused by the publication of Les enchantements de Prudence, Avec George Sand.She had a long-term love affair with the eponymous George Sand. Allart was an active participant in the Parisian intellectual circles.

Hortense Allart is portrayed in a red dress trimmed with an embroidered white collar, shown en trois quartspresents the viewer with calm faces. The heroine is shown against a greenish background, which perfectly complements the red stain of the outfit.
