Porcelain vase with lid and gilt bronze mount. Most likely from the French manufacture of Edme Samson. Hand-painted with famille verte type decoration, it depicts a pair of Chinese phoenix fenghuang surrounded by vegetation and birds. The phoenix in the Far East is a symbol of virtue and grace, and also symbolises the combination of yin and yang. It appears during peaceful and happy times, and hides when danger approaches.

Samson, France, late 19th century.

Height 33.5 cm, vase height 26 cm. 

Condition of preservation very good.
