+Bell, Kutani, Japan, Meiji era (1868-1912).
An interesting Japanese bell made of hand-painted porcelain. The decoration shows dragons once phoenixes and also floral and ornamental friezes. The Japanese phoenix - Hōō is derived from the Chinese prototype - Fenghuang. It is a symbol of virtue and grace, its appearance heralding warmth - summer, as well as peaceful and happy times. The Japanese dragon Ryū is associated with the element of water, and in paintings often emerges from waves or clouds, a symbol of strength and wisdom. The pair of the dragon and the phoenix often equates the pair with the empress, where the dragon represents the emperor and the phoenix the empress.
Height 27 cm, width 18 cm.
