
MEDICEAN CANDLESTICK, bronze, Florence, 16th century
A massive candlestick placed on lion's paws, raising a three-sided base with the centralizing Medici coat of arms.Its volute corners are decorated with powerful acanthus and magnificent aegikrani with abundant festoons.
They are connected by heads of mascarons, holding hanging draperies in their teeth. Their analogous forms are placed on a baluster shaft, supporting a wide profit with a cylindrical sleeve.
Description
Medici (13th - 17th century) - Italian princely family, known for its political influence throughout early modern Europe. Many of its members married into distinguished royal dynasties or achieved the status of the highest church dignitaries. Their banking and commercial achievements resulted in large-scale patronage of the arts.
