Description

A figure of Budai made of carved wood covered with lacquer and gold leaf. It depicts a bald, seated Buddhist monk with a robe that reveals his bare belly. Budai appeared in Chinese iconography during the Song Dynasty and was probably modeled on the eccentric monk Qieci (契此) who lived in the 10th century. This non-canonical image of Buddha is a symbol of happiness and prosperity not only in Far East Asia but also in other parts of the world.
