A sculpture made of gilded wood depicting the Senju Kannon or Kannon ‘of 1000 arms’. This is an esoteric form of the Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara, which first appeared in India in the 7th century AD His earliest Japanese depiction dates from 752 from Fujii Dera Temple in Osaka. To the figure of Senju Kannon it was common to pray for the avoidance of illnesses, sight problems. These figures rarely actually had 1,000 arms, usually the number was much smaller, where each arm was meant to symbolise the next. The figure stands on a storied base with the form of rocks and lotus leaves. Behind the figure is a carved mandorla - a halo. 

Japan, Edo period, 18th - 19th century.

Height 71 cm, figure height 43 cm.

Condition relatively good, rubbing, 3 hands missing.
