with a robe pulling back his bare belly. Budai appeared in Chinese iconography during the Song dynasty and its prototype was probably the eccentric monk Qieci (契此) who lived in the 10th century. This non-canonical image of the Buddha is a symbol of happiness and prosperity not only in Far East Asia but also in other parts of the world. The Budai holds a necklace in his right hand and another unidentified object in his left.
