+ PAGODA IN THE FOREST, large embroidery, Japan, Meiji / Taisho era.
The embroidery shows a Japanese pagoda (Buddhist temple used to store relics) in a grove. The traditional wooden pagoda building has corners slightly bent upwards, which was supposed to resemble tree branches, and it corresponds better with the natural landscape.
Japan, Meiji era (1868-1912) / Taisho (1912-1926).
