LOWER WEEK CHARENTE, A. Willette, France, 1917

A full-length representation of Marianna in the costume of a French revolutionist.

The personification of freedom beats the drum for the Charente celebration. Her Phrygian cap - a symbol of the liberation of Roman slaves, was covered with a bicorn with a republican rosette.

An inscription runs around it: 1917 Semaine de la Charente Infre. Vive la Nation! (Lower Charente Week. Long live the people!)

Adolphe Willette (1857-1926) - French painter and illustrator. Author of many propaganda lithographs and election graphics of his time. A student of Alexander Cabanel, from whom he studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. His works were popular, which is why with time they became cabaret posters, decorations of the windows of the artistic Butte Montmartre district, or elements of café menus. It was he who in 1889 decorated the Moulin Rouge, designing its most recognizable sign - the red mill above the entrance.
